In Amazing Spider-Man #14, we delve deeper into the complexities of Norman's journey as he grapples with the responsibilities of being a superhero. Norman realizes that being Spider-Man is not just about the powers; it's about the impact and the choices one makes. He wonders if he can truly embody the spirit of a hero, while also fantasizing about the glory that comes with it.
This issue brings together two temporary replacements for the iconic Peter Parker, and their paths collide in an unexpected conflict. With Peter Parker out in space, these characters step into the spotlight, but their identities and powers are not as straightforward as they seem.
But here's where it gets controversial... The long-standing rule by Jim Shooter, Marvel's former editor-in-chief, states that every character must be identified by name and their powers demonstrated. While this rule ensures new readers can easily follow along, it has been mocked over the years, especially in team books. In this issue, we see Hallow's Eve and Ben Reilly, who have made limited appearances, and their powers are not explicitly explained. Hallow's Eve's ability to gain different powers through magical masks is unique and deserves clarification, as does Ben's ability to create weapons from... well, you know, GOO!
And this is the part most people miss... The supporting cast often gets overlooked, but writer Joe Kelly is taking the time to develop these characters. He introduces Hallow's Eve, Ben's old girlfriend from the Clone Saga days, who is now a minor Spider-Man supporting character. Her jealousy over Ben's interactions with Peter's girlfriend, Shay, and others, adds an interesting layer to the story. Could she be a potential love interest for the new Spider-Man?
In a lunch meeting with his boss, Maira Osmani-Milton, Norman confronts Ben, but the situation is complicated. It seems Joe Kelly has been setting up this encounter since Amazing Spider-Man #5. Maira has some family issues that will likely unfold in future issues, and her perspective on Norman's presence adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.
Here's where it gets really interesting... Norman and Maira find themselves in danger after Ben leaves, and it appears that Kelly is setting Maira up as a potential love interest for Norman. This development is a refreshing change, as many modern comic books lack a robust supporting cast. With Peter in outer space, expanding the cast becomes crucial, and Kelly delivers on that front.
Norman transforms into Spider-Man and saves Maira from a deadly robot. Up until this point, Norman has only operated at night, but this daytime rescue brings a new dimension to his superhero experience. The adoration he receives shocks him, and it's fascinating to see how he navigates these newfound feelings, especially given his past as a supervillain.
The artwork by Ed McGuinness and his inkers is exceptional, capturing the intensity of the fight scenes. Todd Nauck's contributions outside of Norman's fight add to the overall appeal of the comic.
While Peter's adventures in space may be more captivating at the moment, the Norman and Ben storyline is holding its own. Captain Kintsugi, a new character introduced, might just win over readers, but only time will tell.
