Phoenix Swimming's Matt Williams Suspended: Fraud & Bankruptcy Explained (2025)

A shocking turn of events has shaken the swimming community: Matt Williams, the owner and founder of Phoenix Swimming, has been slapped with a three-year suspension from USA Swimming due to fraud. This decision has sent ripples through the swimming world, raising questions and sparking debate.

The suspension, which began on June 4, 2025, and extends through June 4, 2028, stems from violations of the USA Swimming Code of Conduct. Specifically, Williams was found to have engaged in "any act of fraud, deception or dishonesty" related to USA Swimming activities, as well as "any other material and intentional act... detrimental to USA Swimming."

But here's where it gets controversial... Williams appealed the suspension, and reports indicate he was even present at the GRIT Long Course Invite at Wesleyan College in mid-June, after the suspension's effective date. A USA Swimming spokesperson clarified that the suspension was temporarily on hold during the appeal, only officially taking effect in early November. This raises questions about the enforcement of the initial ruling.

Williams established Phoenix Swimming in Haverville, Mass., back in 2010. The story takes a more complex turn when we consider the legal battles surrounding Williams and his swimming venture. He was taken to court by Stephen Van Der Beken, the head coach of the Manchester Swim Team. The legal dispute began in 2021 and escalated with an involuntary bankruptcy petition filed earlier this year.

The background to this lawsuit involves a 2016 agreement where Williams purchased a 50% stake in Van Der Beken's swim team business. The initial lawsuit in 2021 alleged a breach of contract. The legal proceedings culminated in an order for Williams to pay Van Der Beken a hefty sum: $243,212.00 in damages, plus $58,603.48 for attorney's fees, with a deadline to pay within 60 days. When Williams failed to meet this deadline, Van Der Beken sought further action in State Court.

Adding to the turmoil, Phoenix Swimming faced administrative dissolution in New Hampshire on September 1, 2024, due to the failure to file annual reports for 2023 and 2024. The company had previously experienced a similar situation in 2015, but was later reinstated after paying a fee.

During an October 2024 hearing, Williams admitted his inability to pay the judgment or the fee award. The court then established a payment plan and authorized Van Der Beken to conduct "full financial discovery" from Williams and Phoenix. However, Van Der Beken reported in late December that Williams was allegedly uncooperative with discovery requests.

On January 30, 2025, after a motion to require escrow payments from upcoming swim meets was denied, Van Der Beken filed an involuntary petition in Bankruptcy Court. The petition claimed that Williams was "generally not paying its debts as they become due." However, the court ultimately sided with Williams, dismissing the petition and concluding that Phoenix Swimming was, in fact, generally meeting its financial obligations. The case was closed on April 14, 2025.

And this is the part most people miss... The lack of specific details from USA Swimming regarding the suspension leaves room for speculation.

What do you think? Do you believe the suspension was justified? Do you think the legal battles had any bearing on the suspension? Share your thoughts in the comments below – let's discuss!
